Hi D.Douglas
Yes I did learn some things. One is this gun rust’s easy. It was originally black. I took the blacking off with some rust remover and then polished it. But next time I think I would just tape the whole gun off and just leave the engraving area. That way it would have more contrast. With the black gun and shiny engraving.

Today I went down and got some “Rust prevent corrosion inhibitor for quality firearms” I will spray it on the gun inside and out and hope it stops the rusting. I was hoping the flitz polish would seal it but I was wrong.

The other thing learned was I started to sculpt the outline of the scrollwork with a 115 Deg engraver but when I “hoged” (round engraving bit) out the back ground the edges where not as sharp as I would have liked, so I switched to the 90 Deg graver for the rest of the gun outline. That seemed to work better.

Other than that things went well.

Thanks for the reply Finn. I also use a ninety to clean up the scroll edges nice and crisp. I have learned to use a rotary tool to hog out most of the background but you have to really pay attention to what your doing. Rust prevention is certainly a concern without its protective bluing. Doug
