I did A little wood carving in the past. I stumbled on to this site looking for info on " HOBO Nickles". Iam thinking about trying that out.Any tips or tricks would be great. Thanks in advance.

I don't do "hobo" nickels but I do use nickels for carving practice. You really don't need much for tools to start with as push gravers work pretty well. Lots of information to soak up on this and other sites. You'll have fun.

BTW: I hot melt glue mine to a block of wood to hold while carving. That will work till you get a ball vice.

I just started doing nickels myself, with some great assistance from Billzach.

Some of the key bits I got from him involve going to Gesswein and getting some of their sanding sticks and mold-maker's stones. You'll need them for doing your finishing work on the surface.

Hi Bob,

I started out with two drill bits and a couple of corks for gravers and a nickel glued to a board, so you really don't need much to start. There are several threads on hobo nickel carving and you have a carver not too far from you, Art DelFaveros in Novi, who is well versed in the art and the history. I use hammer and chisel and a home made ball vise now. A very relaxing hobby that pays dividends. Where in Michigan are you located? I grew up in Warren and go back now and then to visit family.
