Cutting with the NITRO G20
My intention on getting the Nitro G20 was to see how it would aid in deep relief and sculpting, but at the request of one of my students who engraves motorcycle parts and others whom work in softer metals I did a little cutting on aluminum.
First I ground a tool using the 110 degree sharpening template, the only adjustment was sharpening the face, I raised the template approx. 3/16 in.so the tool wouldn't dig into the softer metal. Second I sketched a design that I thought could be used on a motorcycle part, something not to detailed as this would be viewed from 3 feet away and more angled cuts for reflections. After making a few test cuts I started scroll cuts without using an optivisor because the design was to large. The Nitro really did its job, the cutting was to the point of being easy, I relaxed and just guided the tool. Basic cuts were done in 5 minutes or so then I added some small reflective cuts and finished up by dulling the background with a punch. I was tempted to do a more refined design but had to remember that in this type of work there would be a lot of area to cover and time is important. To sum up my thoughts on the Nitro G20 it is an impressive tool, it allows more freedom of design, cuts down on engraving time and physical stress. Its capable of very large work while at the same time smooth enough for classic work in harder metals. |

Ditto on that Jerry!!! I was holding off in getting one but it looks like I'm doomed to add another tool to the arsenal. I'm planning on a Harley carving soon so it should come in handy.

Thanks for the review of the nitro. It sounds like a beast... "I added some small reflective cuts and finished up by dulling the background with a punch" Did you do the background with a hammer and punch, or was it mounted in the airgraver? Thanks, Andy

Hello Carl, I also wanted to see what the G20 could do and today I spent some time at Brian Marshall's School in Stockton for a test run. It's a "thumper". I tested it using the 1/8" graver and was very impressed with its power to hog out metal. The control was as you said just point it in the direction and let it go, just remember to hang on and keep your free hand clear. Also the size was purfect for my big hands. This is a great machine for motorcycle and car engraver......JohnR. Also a big Thank You to Brian Marshall for the free demonstration.

I mostly Engrave parts for Motorcycles and Hot Rods. I bought a Nitro G20 this spring and would not ever want to work without it. It is truely an amazing little machine.

Kdavid- I know. It seems inevitable. I just need to order one up. Sounds like too much fun.
Shovelrider- do you suggest using the 1/8 gravers or do you find that the smaller ones are enough fir motorcycle engraving? Rod |

Rod, I use 1/8". When doing Motorcycle parts you have to plow deep for it to be visible. Remember you are looking at it parked at the curb. They also work fine if you have to lighten up.
