Colt SAA Engraving
I have a SAA posted on another forum that I just purchased. It is absolutely the most beautiful piece of artwork I have owned. The letter(I just received today) states the gun was shipped "soft" for finishing outside the factory. It was shipped to Hartley & Graham in New York. The gun was engraved in 1884 but I don't know who actually did it. I assume the same person probably did the mother of pearl grips also. From what I understand the only way to know the engraver would be through a study. I have a few pics already but can get some closeups if needed. I also think the gun is silver plated and not nickel.

Re: Colt SAA Engraving
Thanks JJ. Here are some better close-ups. I'm getting ready to buy a Nimschke book and see what I can come up with. I know I have to get a jewelers loop also. I figure that all I can really grt with pictures is what people "think". It's pretty hard to figure out without an item in your hand. I was reffered to this forum just in case someone might know. Thanks again.

Re: Colt SAA Engraving
Anyone here a firearms engraver expert? Has anyone done a study of Nimschke or other engravers? Thanks.

Re: Colt SAA Engraving
Try to get in touch with Roger Bliele he is our resident expert. If this is a LDN engraved Colt, you have a very expensive prize!_JR

Re: Colt SAA Engraving
Quite possibly LDN however the pictures have glare and shadows in all the wrong places so I can't make an accurate assessment at this time.

Re: Colt SAA Engraving
It's either a Nimschke piece or someone who knew his work very well
and copied his style expertly. Hartly and Grahm was a shipping address for soft guns sent to Nimschke for engraving. In any case you have a real nice old Colt here, very desireable... George
