I've done lots of things over the years. In the early days and with a young family I would do just about anything to make some money. I painted a lot, landscapes and portraits. I also did a lot of artwork on slates by scraping, today we would call it scrimshaw!

As for music, I once made a copy of a Gibson Flying V and even wound the pickups. I played slide on it and usually Jonny Winter numbers.

Today i've gone back to when I was a teenager, i'm re-creating The Shadows recordings from the early 60's by doing my own backing tracks and playing lead guitar, it's a nostalgia thing

Phil, Thank you for the great downloads. They do bring back the sixties. The sounds and memories that go with them. They kind of have the Ventures sound to them. I appreciate the flashback. Wipe Out kind of thing.

Have you ever used music as an engraving theme. Ive seen a couple of shotguns done with cars and naked women or birds or dogs in a fantasy theme out of Italy. Horses and First Americans even feathers but I can't recall anything done around music. I know you have done portraits of many Royals just wondering if you or anybody you know of has created engravings of the Royals of Rock and Roll.

Seems you must have gotten into music around the time I did. Johnny Winter was a favorite of mine, along with Led Zep, Eric Clapton, Stones and many others. Later on Dire Straits became one of my favorites, as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan. I still listen mostly to what I grew up with! YouTube is GREAT for watching just about anything you can desire.

I've done a quite a few "Theme" guns but I don't think i've done any based on music etc.

Simon did six guns for Eric Clapton a few years ago but they were large scroll and with a single red gold rose and nothing to do with music.

Awesome work Phil. Is there anything in life you have tried that you have been unsuccessful at. It looks to me like everything you do is done to the highest skill level. Having been a keen wildfowler, It made the work even more appealing to me.
Expect a knock at your door when the Lottery win eventually catches up with me. Knives, Shotguns and Rifles, to name but a few items for you to decorate.

You keep raising the bar for what can be achieved in the art of Engraving.

It's difficult to come up with appropriate superlatives to describe work of this caliber. I've always believed that anything done by hand is, by definition, a craft. The individual craftsman is responsible for using his or her talent, ability and creativity to elevate their work beyond the craft. Phil Coggan's art is clearly in a class by it's self.

I am actually working on a Purdey S/S with a similar design, this time, Pointers raising quail on both sides and a pair of Springer Spaniels heads underneath.

It will probably be finished by the end of the year.

I was just doing some math, and 7 months of work, 5days a week and 8 hours a day makes roughly 224 hours of time invested. I'm sure that is a lowball figure but it shows how much time is needed to produce great quality pieces. Thanks for posting these exquisite pieces and for keeping my creative juices flowing! I study every one of them far longer than I need to, but I CANT HELP MYSELF!!!!
