couple new knives

Here are a couple I have done recently. Ron Luebke did the scrim on the one knife.
Which was an awesome job. I studied it under the scope, he is really good. The
design used, which is Fracassi-ish, or Klimisch with liberty style scroll, was chose
for its subtleness. We wanted to let the scrim be the center piece and just accent
it with ornamental work. The background is all lines, but blurs out to a soft gray.

The other is the second edition of the hunter and hunted series. I did one last
year, on a similar knife with a leopard and gazelle.

Brian those are truly amazing. absolutely incredible. I love the Liberty type scroll with all the lines running through it.I believe Francesca Fracassi does most of that type of ornamental background and Firmo does the scenes. At least thats what it says in the Fracassi master engravers book. You did a great job on it! How many lines you think are in that background?

The Hunter knife took about 3 weeks to engrave, plus a couple days of drawing time to design it. And yes I am very slow.

Well, speed counts when you are making a living at it, it can mean the difference between working from a studio or a tent. As many know, engraving can be a tricky balancing act between art and business.

The knives where not sold, they were for private collectors.

Chris you crack me up. No ass kissing required. The only reason I take part in these forums is that I like to see what other guys are doing, when Phil, Barry, Ron, yourself, etc. post up work I always check it out. And so I post this stuff up in return. The social networking, tool war, bickering, is what creates the longs stints of my non participation.

Klimsch is a great study, there are so many little things he does that you can pull from to add more dimension to your own style. It is a great resource to anyone who wants to better understand design concepts, lighting effects, and such.

Glad I could give you a chuckle Brian Those things have certainly calmed down a lot and I haven't even been banned yet .

No virtual knee pads ... Outstanding work needs to be seen and all acknowledgment of achievement is very well deserved. It makes me want to get back to the more ornamental projects I have neglected on my bench for lack of motivation (and better commercial opportunity).

18th and 19th Century ornament should be on every syllabus of study. I think a lot of folks don't know that some of his work is published and readily available. From what I have seen so far, you are doing Klimsch better than Klimsch.

Old stock certificates are also a great resource for study in creating dimension and depth.

hey Brian .. you are just fantastic . i love the work that you do , some day i will develop the nack of belino as well as you and a lot of other master engraveds do . but Colt is my bag and they dont require a lot of belino . i am now working on a coffin handle knife that i am doing one of my favorite ladies on , the goddiest Diana . i will show if it is good engough . thanks again for posting your work .. ron p
