another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
hi, my name is Matt, as the title of this thread implies i am a toolmaker by profession. I recently took a 2 day class tought by Carl Beile. it was well worth the money! we didnt waste any time and got right to work as soon as i arrived. Mr. Bleile was very polite and knowledgeable. i went into his class with basically no engraving skill or experience. when i left his 2 day class i was cutting engravings that i never thought i would be able to do before. Mr. Bleile never left and was always right by me ready to educate. I recommend Carl's engraving class to all aspiring engravers.
Since Carl's class i purchaced a lindsay artisan airgraver and i machined myself a engraving ball vise. This is the first forum ive ever posted on, so ill post pictures as soon as i figure out how too. |

Hi Matt, Welcome.
Great you got to work with Carl. Is he far from you? I see you are in Ohio too.

Re: another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
The artisan works great. I have it set up and I have been practicing with it. I'm very happy with it. I'll post some pictures as soon as I figure out how to. I'm a little technologically impaired.

Good on pics to see what you're creating.

Re: another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
I wonder if the photos are too large and you'd need to size them down first. In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes.

Re: another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
Good-- Glad you got the pic posting figure out. Cool on the vise. What diameter stock did you start with? Is it 6" or larger than that?
Your engravings practicing is coming along too. Try to set time aside each day to engrave, trying different designs and/or items to cut..etc, to keep it fun.

Re: another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
The vise is 6" diameter. I machined it from 420 ramax stainless steel that's been prehardened to 36hrc. I'm very fortunate in that t
he company i work for lets me rummage through the scrap bin. I got all the material for the vise for free because of that ! |

Re: another toolmaker learning the art of engraving
Great on the 420ss from the scrap bin! The steel prices just keep going up.
