Sam, it's over my desk, it's piece of crap floor lamp with a screw-in flourecant bulb. If I get it just right I can take a good pic. I'm hoping later to have some thing better soon. pap

This is a simple but very effective light "tent" or diffuser made from two coat hangers, two pieces of wood dowel and some freezer paper taped into place. I find a two bulb four foot fluorescent light fixture works great. When taking a photo move your eyes around until you are in a position where the engraving looks best without dull spots and then put your camera right where your eyes were.

The diffuser can be lowered right over the object so that rounded items can be photographed with good coverage all around.

I'll post an example next.

This is the cartridge trap cover off a drilling that fits on the underside of the stock. It is the equivalent of a 7/8" pipe split lengthwise. As you can see, the above light diffuser gave good exposure all the way around from side to side.

And best of all, the diffuser only cost a couple of dollars, or less. The light fixtures are fairly cheap at home depot or such places and easy to hang. I have worked under such light for 40 plus years. The new LED replacement bulbs are even better. I used the toggled 5000K bulbs and just love them!

PS...my light is placed about 2 1/2 feet above and 1/2 foot behind my vise.

pap and Sam, I apologize for asking a different question in your post, first super idea Sam on the diffuser, I will definitely try the tent. Sam, you said that the cartridge trap was like a 7/8 pipe split lengthwise. I would very much like to make some practice pieces, would you be willing to enlighten me about the width, length and shape of the trap? Again, pap sorry for butting in with a different question.

Asking questions is what this is about Roger. The trap is about 7/8" wide and perhaps 4 inches long.

This is a photo tent I use at the FEGA show each year to take photos of the contest winners and Andrew uses in The Engraver.

It consists of a tripod, a bed sheet and a G9 camera. I use a couple of lead weights to hold the sheet out over the table. Lighting is simply the overhead lights at the show. The sheet drapes down in front of the tripod as well as over the table. There is a 10" by 12" plastic slab mounted in the camera's hot shoe slot and this holds the sheet out from the lens.

I'll post a photo result next.

Here is some Lee Griffiths magic, photo take at the '16 FEGA show using the above light tent. The tent and accessories excluding the tripod fit into a small shoulder bag for easy carrying and can be used in many locations..

Thank you Sam for the information. It's amazing that light can get through the sheet, I have airbrushed in ballrooms that didn't have very bright lights. I must try this tonight. Glare is always a problem, seems you have solved it. Another question, I was playing with my phone camera and placed it against the rubber on my microscope, it seemed to work ok. Is that what others do to get good close up pictures of pieces on their ball vice?

Sam when using your camera, do you have a small sd slot in you computer to transfer your photo's please? All this one has is the regular sd app.1"x1.125". as always............fraternally. pap

Rob, I use the freezer paper diffuser at home for almost all the photos I shoot "in the shop". I have used the sheet tent once or twice on the dining room table but the freezer paper diffuser is fast and easy. The sheet tent I use at the FEGA show. I once asked a displayer at the SCI show if I could throw the sheet over a gun on his table and surprisingly was allowed to do so, getting a fine photo of some great engraving.

Roger, I don't use a 'scope but seems there are 'phone adaptors sold by telescope outfits to hook phones to the eyepiece...these might be something to look into.

My computer has card readers for several types of cards but I mostly use a USB cable to connect the Canon camera to the computer. I do have a "smart" phone that is so smart it stays home on the wall where it belongs.
