Looks like everyone has gone or is going to Reno, so here's something for the rest to look at even if the pics are a bit fuzzy!

Absolutely beautiful work. I love all the varying design elements, especially the diagonal gold wire criss cross pattern.
Do you carve that all from gold sheet or do you cast the inlay pieces first to achieve the extra high relief? |

Phil
Is 'simple' another one of those words that has completely different meanings in the US vs the UK? Someday, God willing, I'll be able to do parts of that. Not sure I'll ever be able to make it to that level but I plan to have fun trying! |

Hi Phill,
Yep, I agree, Simple Gold Job. Nice effect for such a simple job though. I have looked at it and think I can do this no problem. 5 a day. The only problem was waking up and looking at youre (behind closed eyes) simple job again. ![]() Jou must be teasing us just a bit on the "simple" side. Thanks for showing, Daniel |

Jerry, we should discuss the engraving business as it pertains to the oncoming s***ty economy.
It seems to be some sort of taboo on the forums and I'm surprised no-one has started a thread. Maybe we could all come up with some ideas that might ease the fall. I thought I might be selling my Harley but I'm having second thoughts after you mentioned a ride through the Smokeys. Chris |

Good day Phil,
May be the only simple thing about this is that You are simply a master at what you are doing. Cheers "VAN" |

Phil,
I hate it when people ask me this question. How long does a project like that take to complete? It hard for me to imagine how you could get more than a couple guns like that done per year. Maybe 4-5 at most. Is that about right?

For a bird that size the sheet I used was about 0.5mm. thick, and John you're not far out with 4to 5.

Thank's!
Is there a rule for material thickness on overlay's? Or is it just how deep you want to be able to engrave on them that decide's the thickness. |

There's no rule on the thickness, it's a matter of taste, but for carving, if it's too thin it will be difficult to get the roundness. Over a certain thickness it will lock gross.
If you want to get that thick look without spending a lot on thicker gold, just cut away the metal from inside the edge of the birds and then undercut, leaving the centre proud. Key this as usual. Phil |

Phil,
Thank you for these dazzling examples of your art and mastery of technique! So generous! I will drive over the 7200 foot Donner Pass to Reno if the snow is not too bad. Aer Lingus has some good flights from Dublin to San Francisco. I have room in my mini van and a few extra guitars, if you feel like going to Reno? A few of us get to pickin' and strummin' late in the evening. Steve, we will miss you this year! best Rod |
