Default Yet another unknown engraver

Hi,

Attached are pictures of a custom rifle and its believed to have been engraved in Austria. Its a Mauser in .270wcf. I can find no evidence of a signature buried within the engraving. It was stocked by Tom Shelhammer and there is reason to think it was completed in 1958. Its was bought from a Abercrombie & Fitch salesman as it was his property - not the stores. Both are long expired, though his name was Joe A. Its remotely possible that Norbert Nubbs Fashingbauer was the metal smith but that just a wag.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Richard,

As I have indicated in the past, it is very difficult for me to discern the work of one German or Austrian engraver from another because of the way they are trained to design and execute their traditional designs.

What I can say about the engraving on this particular rifle is that the quality of execution is of the highest order, especially for the time period. The sculpting of the oak leaves is exceptional and the animals are especially well done.

I suggest you contact Austrian master, Martin Strolz who is most knowledgeable about the work of his countrymen.

Regards,
Roger

Looks like Joe Fugger's engraving, did he sign his work? J.J.

JJ,

It is definitely the quality of Fugger's work but without a signature, who knows?

Roger

You might look under the action (remove from stock) A&F often stamped and might be signed hidden by stock_JR
