Good Morning Roland,
The pigeon in flight looks super, all the different shading from light grey to the black on the tail all blending beautifully.

The different grey is given by the number of cross line and dots. if you put less you have grey light and darkness if you put more and without space between.

HI Roland,
The two pigeons at the base of the tree have come out beautifully clear amongst the grass, leaves, flowers and mushrooms at the base of the tree yet their surroundings is in grey and shades of grey too!!
The whole scene at the base of the tree and the pigeon in flight are in similar grey and shades of grey, yet lighter in color than the stippled background in the scrolls.
Roland that is magnificent in all aspects of engraving and bulino.
Thank you very much again for taking the time !! I Appreciate.

Roland

That looks like it's marvelously clear even when not at just the right angle. I know the traditional Bulino is pretty angle sensitive for viewing but this looks like it goes significantly deeper - even being a bit sculptural.

I have to agree with SE - you've done a tremendous job of managing the grey levels.

Generally I never see the complete gun but for this one I have the chance to see it complete because it is for private customer and not for gunmaker.
Normally, soon I will see the finished gun and I try to take pictures but I believe it will be hard to take a good one.
It will be the end of this thread ;-)

Last one, all is finished.
Maybe I'll made a picture of complete gun but I am not sure...

Thanks Roland!

I've saved that sequence picture off for study.

I know in my case there wasn't much I could say along the way except "Hey, that's still looking great"

Great summ up Roland!
Getting these extra pictures makes me wonder how much time gets into prepping the gun for engraving.
Did you have a lot to do before you got your design layed out? Or did the gun came transfer ready?

A quick note - I saw elsewhere that some people are having trouble seeing this great sequence. It's one long photo and if your browser is set to the default setting of fitting the image in the window there's no way it'll be viewable. But clicking on it should open it up. I long ago changed the setting on mine to not resize images.

Hello Roland!
Bonne continuation!
Hanne

Chapeau, Roland I enjoyed watching the whole process a lot, very beautiful work as well as very interesting!! I must say, from viewing the first photo's where we could see 'only' the engraved lines, I loved it just like that already, even when not finished at all, your engraved lines by themselves turn the rifle into a true work of Art! My congratulations, for showing!
Greetings, Paulsph

Just an observation-When I was very new to engraving I got the McKenzie tapes and he states that because of the highly finished surfaces that when you cut it is the finished work and should require no additional sanding or finishing (other than bluing of course). I have tried to follow this advise and note that you obviously do as well (whether you ever heard it or not). I was looking at one of the Italian engravers books and noted that the cutting and relieving background left a lot of really rough surface and edges which would need a lot of clean up before shading could occur.. You could have stopped at just about anytime and the piece would have been finished I have really enjoyed this post thanks again-Fred

Congratulations on your fine acquisition and THANK YOU!

The thanks are both for providing the direct support of this fine artwork and for letting Roland share it with us.

As you've seen from the comments here, you did get something extremely fine.
