Further Scuba tank hook-up information
Hello All: After reading brandvik's article on running the AirGraver from a scuba tank, I decided because of the portability that was for me, I had problems sourcing the items he listed so did it in a similar but simpler way,
the items I used were; 1. Air tank 2. 1st stage regulator 3. Inflator hose 4. Quick connect nipple with 1/8 thread (standard to fit the 1st stage) 5. A 1/8 male to M5 female connector All available from the scuba and hardware store. The quick connect nipple fits directly into the (in) side of the regulator, the 1/8 to M5 to the other (out) side, the Steve Lindsay plastic connector screws into the M5 thread, the inflator hose connects/ disconnects to the nipple, and that is it. I haven't used Steve Lindsay's regulator in the picture as it is fitted to my workshop wall. |

Hi Andy, What a nice simple setup. Have you figured out how long of time the scuba tank will last between refills?

Hello Steve; I bought a 12l tank and the one pictured is a 3l buddy tank, I will keep a note of how long they last, one thing I have noticed, when the tank valve is shut off your tool works for 3/4minutes with just the air in the hose..

I'll be goin to the local dive shop this next week.. Will get prices for setup shown. and i'll be setting mine up with the footpedal units..... Let ya know the results when I get things working........ Will be useing them for demos at the Clinton Library in Sept... . |

Hello Ron: the stuff pictured came to £153 not including the regulator + £3 to fill the tank(whatever the size) converted that is $288 but as You are in the US you will I am sure get a better deal.
PS; I bought all new, I think most dive stores have a used department so it could cost a lot less. |

One minor addendum - you don't really need anything fancy on the reg first stage; pretty much any reg will do for this if it's not going to get in-water use. There's some on EBay for about $30 at the moment.

Where can I get that 2nd stage regulator? Is that a Lindsay product? Does Lindsay sell one? I'll need mine for foot pedal control....dave

You might want to check out the post I did on Carbon Fiber Air Tanks for the Lindsay Airgraver.
It has a way of using scuba tanks to refill Carbon Fiber tanks used in Paintball guns. This way you don't need to find a primary regulator to reduce the pressure down to 1000 psi where the regulator for the CO2 tanks can handle it. Then when your Carbon fiber tank is empty, you can refill the tank from the ( or any) scuba tank with a fitting sold by Tippman Co. for this purpose. The fitting cost about $35. I have bought a bottle of CO2 that use welding in my shop, but smaller, to take her home, and it works perfectly, I do not know is how I would last, its load is 2.50kg
Does anyone know how much I can take the bottle with this burden? Let me see...
That tank is about 4 times the size of the little paintball tanks that I (and others) use and those are good for about 8 - 10 hours so it should be good for up to 40 hours or so of use. If you're very careful about hitting the off switch on the regulator anytime you set the handpiece down for more than a few seconds you'll get longer life. If you do a lot of stippling you'll get shorter life. But I'd guess it should last around a week or so. Report back and let us know how long it actually lasts. |

Give me a joy so the bottle lasts, because I can take her to my house and practice on the weekends, every day I can not for lack of time, will try to calculate the time it takes me load. I still I have no experience in the engraving, I have not used my airgraver more than two hours, now I'm very busy with my professional work in the smithy of my workshop. Yo todavía no tengo nada de experiencia en el grabado, no he usado mi airgraver más de dos horas, ahora mismo estoy muy liado con mi trabajo profesional en la fragua de mi taller. |
