Somethin' for Dad ....
Here's a small belt buckle off the bench today and fashionably late for Father's Day as it'll arrive at it's destination Monday
 This buckle has been kicking around for almost 30 years. Made in U.S.A by BTS in 1981 ... it's brass with an elephant ivory insert. It's been buried on my bench for the last 3 years waiting for something. I've never cut ivory before so I've ventured way out of my element. The Airgraver works wonders in cutting lines in ivory. I used a Carbalt, 70 degree "V", bulino graver which I added a small polished heel to. A 50 degree face cut just fine so I didn't change it. I used an extra light piston Steve made for me, shortened the stroke and cranked the air down to 10 pounds. The trick is to not go deep on the first pass of the cut but make multiple passes. The drawing was transferred using acetone/toner method. Sanded back with a well worn piece of 4/0 paper and lightly buffed, then added India ink. Once the initial fear of potentially trashing this ivory wore off, it was a piece of cake. Can't wait to try some more.

Hi Daniel,
The ornamental style is a cross between two that I saw in 19th century books. The "old man" is real conservative so if it ain't Old English or block I don't know how well this style will fly with him. The non-leafy 19th Century ornamental ciphers and monograms were considered masculine and acceptable for men during that time. I figured it would be a shame to use some computer generated font ... besides, I really wanted to see how curves cut and how well a scroll design might play out for a future project in ivory. Catch ya later, Chris p.s. ... good thing I didn't put this in the mail today. Looks like I gotta take out the ivory and reverse the buckle. It's just held in with some super tacky RTV.

Hi Dble ... Hi Vern .... He got it the other day. Good thing I reversed the ivory.
I figure Pop will put it someplace safe while he gets a belt for it and forget where that "safe" place was.  Catch ya later guys.
