I was wondering when this was going to come out... steve pretty much had every graver point except stipple.

edit: pardon my ignorance but what does the hex stipple templates do? I understand the circular template makes a point but the others make no sense to me.

Hi Andrew, The hex helps make a hex stipple faceted point or by using only three of the facets on the template, a triangle stipple point. The small one makes a more narrow, long point while the large one makes a steeper, less narrow point. Or use them together, the small one to thin the blank and the large one to grind the tip right at the end.

Andre,
With the round point the light isn't breaking and with angle it is better and easier to have a black point.

At last! I was wondering how long itt would take! This is a great addition to the system, it sure is nice making consistant sharpened gravers, What a time saver. i make several gravers ready when doing a project and it is sure nice to quickly change gravers and keep on trucking. I've kept time records on several projects and using the templets have
saved an average of at least 15% compared to the non templet days. My hat's off to a great contributor to the field-JR

I'm curious if there's a photo uploaded somewhere that shows examples of each of these stipples on the same plate for a side by side comparison?

The hex templates came about from mrthe's idea of a octagonal shaped stipple template in a pm. Thanks again mrthe! Here are pics of the sharpening of the hex using the small template first and then the large for the actual tip. I'm using Tom White's diamond power hone to make quicker work of grind most of this.

Using the small hex template first grind two opposite sides of the graver the same amount on both sides until they meet.

Then grind the other four facets. Rather than trying to look at the point to figure out which one to grind more it is easier
to watch how far back on the graver shank they are going so each is ground the same amount.

Now place the final point on by using the larger Hex template with a 2000 diamond bench stone.

Here is another picture I tried to take of it under the scope.

I am finding that round templates are harder to use than templates with flat facets. If making a round stipple point with a 3/32" square graving blank, I find it easiest to first just hand hold the graver up against the diamond power hone while spinning it in my fingers. After it is a long taper to a point then the round template can help with the 2000 bench stone to place the final tip on. Just like the round bottom graver template though this round stipple template is a bit of an art to grind the same amount on the arc so that the point doesn't come out to be an oval. The way I have been making round stipple points for years is to place a carbide bur in the NSK Presto handpieces. With the carbide bur spinning in the Presto hold it against a diamond lap or diamond bench stone. It is quick and easy to make a long slender needle stipple point this way. I then take the bur out of the Presto, push it into a piece of brass tubing and then place it in the AirGraver. Here is a picture from some earlier threads of it. The other item in the pic is a brass punch for hammering in gold wire inlays with the AirGraver.

HI,

When a template/point system is designed I find if ,like in this instance, the Carl B templates , Rolands inlay,A few pictures of the points are also posted , then it becomes easy to shape the point.

;-)
You can do it with dual angle too BUT your point will come very fast short because isn't really precise like template.
The template is the best way to sharp and it is very economical. You sharp all time only what you want and no more.
